Need some advice (Linux)
« on: March 31, 2014, 03:52:54 AM »
Alright so I need help with this issue I have with this laptop of mine (Toshiba Satellite L755). You see whenever I try to install Linux on here the install process goes just fine but whenever I try a GUI environment it freezes whenever I click on anything or I open a program and I can't close it. I've been trying to solve this issue on and off for over a year now but I still can't seem to find a fix for the issue. I've tried multiple DE's (XFCE, KDE, GNOME, Cinnamon) and distro's (Ubuntu 11 and 12, Mint, Arch, Debian, Fedora, and more which I can't seem to recall). It's getting really annoying because I really want to install Linux on this system (preferably Arch since that is my favorite distro so far) but I can't because of how annoying this issue is. I've read up on it and it seems other satellite users are having issues with Linux as well (not my exact issue but they're still having problems). If anyone can help me diagnose this issue I would greatly appreciate it since I'm sick of running Winblows on this machine :P.

Hmm I cant help you diagnose it without seeing what happens, try post some screenshots if you can....

Anyway I just wanted to suggest another linux distro that always works for me:
http://mirror.slitaz.org/iso/4.0/slitaz-4.0.iso

Its only a 35mb ISO so give it a try. And a final question have you try booting it into command line instead of GUI?

Alright so I did a successful arch install running xfce4 and it's all going good accept for the gui. I'm typing this on my phone am since my gui is being weird. It doesn't freeze but a lot of things are unresponsive so id have to navigate with my keyboard. I can also only open one thing at a time. I did the last I command so I'll leave that pic below and hopefully get this issue resolved soon. Thanks to the people who are helping me with this issue I really appreciate it.

Alright , did you check the arch wiki about intel ? Some chipsets require a few settings here and there.
I also suggest you turn on more logging and check dmesg for any errors especially after startup.

Yes I did follow the arch wiki about Intel graphics but the gui is still buggy for me. I even checked does but it didn't come up with anything. Not sure what else I need to check here.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I can. The gui is less buggy now when I enabled accelerationbut it still has some hangs where I can't do anything in an application and I constantly have to ALT + F4 to quit it.

I highly doubt this has anything to do with it, but are you connected to an external monitor? I had some trouble with that when I first installed Arch.

Which linux distro are you wanting to install?  And are you trying to partition the drive or install it over windows as well?  I have a satellite and i've never had any issues with linux.  My guess is you need to change some settings in Bios
