Ubuntu 12.04 [AMD Fix]
« on: January 23, 2013, 02:29:01 AM »
So I have been having computer issues here of late. This on computer didn't want to take an install from anything but the BackTrack 4 CD I had.So after 2 days of fucking with it, and abut maybe 8min of google (face-palm), I found a way to install the other CD I had, Ubuntu 12.04.

When ever I tried installing Ubuntu, it would give me a fatal message along the lines of, "Unable to install, check log messages" or something or another. I seen people where having the same issues I was having with XUbuntu installs.

After a bit of google, I noticed all of them are using AMD chipsets. I myself trying to install with an AMD chipset and seeing the same errors, tried the fix.

The fix is
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu
This fixed me. And am now running Ubuntu 12.04 (for now) off le harddrive.

This was the fix but took something else to get there. In the LiveCD I could not for the life of me get a terminal up. CTRL+ALT+T didn't work. Couldn't find it in the FS or anything. But from the thread Lucid started with the issues I was having to begin with, someone mentioned CTRL+ALT+F[1-6] to get a TTY screen.

So if you can't get a terminal with all other methods, drop into a TTY terminal, log in, do what needs to be done. switch back to desktop with CTRL+ALT+F7, and install.

TL:DR
If you get an error installing Ubuntu with an AMD chipset:

Boot to LiveCD desktop
CTRL+ALT+F1
sudo apt-get remove ubiquiry-slideshow-ubuntu
CTRL+ALT+F7
Click the install Ubuntu

Next, is getting rid of Unity,

Well that last one is easy.

apt-get install gnome-shell

I believe. If not you could just try gnome instead of gnome-shell. I warn you though. Precise Pangolin is remarkably buggy.

I was going to append to my post but you beat me to it, lol I was distracted with porn.
And yes, apt-get install gnome-shell is what ya need. But I have read that gnome-shell is for newer OS's, and older distros of Ubuntu needed just plain Gnome, but it was installed by default so IDK what kinda shit I was reading..
