Want to buy a new laptop
« on: November 17, 2012, 11:25:28 PM »
My latop's crap,so I'm going to buy a new one,but I don't know wich one I should buy...
I have a budget of 1000 € and want a laptop with a least 8GB RAM and at least 750 GB HDD with a second slot to add a SSD. And it should also have not only drivers for Windows, but Linux too.

I'm currently thinking of buying "Asus N76VM-V2G-T1024V", but I heard ASUS isn't that good, and it has no drivers for Linux (googled a bit, lots of missing drivers (wifi etc)), and also it has only USB 3.0 slots, but most BIOS only support USB 2.0,and I want to be able to boot OSes live from USB too...

So has anyone suggestions for a better laptop/experience with the ASUS N76/experience with a laptop that fulfills the upper requirements?

EDIT:
And the laptop should have a german keyboard (qwertz + ö,ä,ü etc...)

Get Toshiba and stay away from Asus.
May I ask what is wrong with Asus? Just curious, because my motherboard in the computer I built is Asus...

Ive always ran asus laptops and ill never switch to anything else.
These things dont die on me.

Unable to boot from USB ? that sounds like nonsense to me.

Well I have to warn you for one thing in particular, almost all laptops nowadays use Optiums technology.
Nvidia for example refuses to do any linux support whatsoever (as linus publically stated "Fuck You NVIDIA")

I Strongly advice you to buy NON optimus!!

For the rest make sure you have a proper wireless chipset such as Atheros.

These 2 things are the most important things when buying a laptop and you want to run linux.
Please take my advice as you will be dissapointed in the long run.

Ive spent roughly 900 euros for a laptop not knowing this.
I was a linux newbie back than, ahhw the pain, the horror.
But when it comes to Asus , man I love their laptops.
Fuck HP , fuck sony (too expensive) fuck acer for cheap hardware.
Thats just my experience.

They're too expensive

http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/satellite/P870/P870-ST3NX1/
It has a QWERTY keyboard, and I'd prefer QWERTZ keyboards (esp. w/ german layout (+ ä,ö,ü))

Unable to boot from USB ? that sounds like nonsense to me.
I've bought a USB Stick with 3.0,and it worked on no computer I tried it on,so I googled the problem, and found out that lots of BIOSes don't support 3.0 yet...

I also found the "Toshiba Satellite L870-177". What do you guys think of this one?
Esp. when it comes to Linux (drivers etc)?

ADD:
Had a look at Dell's homepage too and found the "Dell Inspirion 7520"

Why would you want to boot from USB 3.0?
This is only needed for installing, thats like only once.
Or am I missing something here.

Btw the website wont tell you anything interesting about linux drivers nor compat.
The only thing that can actually help you is go to a shop , take a bootable pendrive, stick it in and do; lspci , lsusb and lscpu.
Save that output to a file and do your research back at home.
Noone is gonna disclose their specific chipsets and this is the only real way to find out.
As I said no optimus and an Atheros wireless chipset and your all set.
The rest is irrelevent.

The Dell Inspiron has a lot going for it,but in my opinion is that HP is much better
check this : HP 17.3" Pavilion Laptop - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive - Dark Umber
Best value for money

The "ASUS N76" has only USB 3.0 slots, so I'm not sure if I would still be able to boot from USB

The HP Pavilion has a nVidia graphics card, wich seems to be not supported that well by linux...

Also found this one:
"Lenovo ThinkPad Twist"

Don't mean to thread jack, but  I'd recommend Nvidia with linux in general, not only because they are faster, but because the binary driver doesn't cause as much trouble as the ati one,i hade a similar debate in another forum and there is not any issue with Nvidia.imo.

Anyway in the topic, yes  Lenovo looks very nice, sweet.

^ this used to be true.
But since most laptops use optimus this isnt true anymore.
NVIDIA refused to support optimus for linux.
Nowadays nvidia is dead to linux, go ATI really!
For a PC nvidia would be good, for laptops not, dont go through the trouble.

This doesnt mean you cannot boot USB2.0 as 3.0 is backwards compatible with 2.0 otherwise my wireless adapter wouldnt work either.

I had a look on nVidia's homepage, and there are now drivers for every card for Windows,Linux,Solaris and FreeBSD as well as for 32bit and 64bit.
And with "Bumblebee" I have a Linux-Community version of nVidia's "Optimus".

So I think I'm going to go for the "ASUS N76", as there're linux-drivers for everything now, and with "Bumblebee" the missing Optimus support for Linux isn't a problem anymore too....
And it's the only laptop with a 2nd slot, where I can add a SSD...

Any objections why I shouldn't choose the ASUS?
Otherwise going to buy it till end of the week...

Omg dude it looks like your really not gonna take my word for it.
Dont Buy OPTIMUS.

Yes a couple of people hacked together a replacement like bumblebee and ironhide.
I know because im using it.
I Do not recommend it because it sucks when it comes to performance.

The nvidia output is streamed (proxied) to your primairy screen.
This gives a huge performance impact.

I wish I hadnt spent soo much money on this optimus crap.
:(

Go for a Sager from one of their resellers. They're cheap and outta this world, don't overpay for a name brand...
