Computer giving electrical shocks
« on: October 12, 2012, 11:04:00 AM »
okay so was using my computer(it has a towercasing ) with a sata supported powersupply all was working well then days back the computer won't run and on pressing the POWER button i would hear BEEP BEEP twice and no display so I disassembled and reassembled the whole motherboard and stuff like that and it still won't work then I had an old powersupply (not sata supported) of my old OPTIPLEX GX270 ,I installed that in my computer and worked well , no beep sounds(like those of system bell ) , but the powersupply won't fit in the casing because of its size so i installed it and putit on the side of table and use computer like that ,now whenver I touch my computer it would give me electric shocks :/ (the casing is of some metal idk which metal) , I never got electric shocks before its allworking well beside the electric shocks but i was wondering if those electric shocks affect on my comptuer in anyway ?like the motherboard or stuff
and p.s no shocks when i have my feet off the ground like on chair or while wearing sleepers ,help

Read up a bit on electricity. What you've is called leakage.

Have earthing installed on your place if you don't have it.

Also if you have earth then do this..

Get an insulated wire and put one end in the middle (the big hole) of your socket and the other end on the metal case. Problem solved

Probably a faulty supply. I had this problem with my laptop once - whenever I would touch a metal part I would get shocked a bit. But the next day it somehow disappeared.

I've already answered it. Read up on leakages. the previous one did not leak, this one does.

either your place lacks earthing or it is bad earthing or your power supply lacks earth.

Just do what i said and you won't get shocked.
It's all about earth and that is why touching feet on earth gets you shocked.

Yes it can get nasty. There is a reason earthing is done.

When you say earthing you mean grounding right? Like the black wire is the ground wire?

Yes, it is not grounded. When you install a power supply in the case itself, it grounds to the casing. Your nigger-rigged power supply needs to be grounded.

The green one here is the ground wire. The centre of the socket one..
His power supply is "nigger-rigged" lmao.

Whatever, if you lack a grounding at your place use your water tap as a temp solution. The tap must be metal.

On that note, you can't always go by color of wires. It is uber standard these days, but just throwing that out there. Especially for super cheap crap you get from China on Ebay or something.

Definitely. I have an extension board without ground wire going to the socket at all. They just saved "HUGE" amount of  money lol.

Then there is a spare charger that got old and wires peek  out. It has three yellow wires.. To hell with colour coding.

Better use a tester to check.
