Crunchbang Or Mint
« on: March 12, 2014, 01:13:01 AM »
Hello everyone, i am looking to switch over to *nix. I have narrowed down the results to Crunchbang and Mint. I have researched both of them quite extensively and was leaning more so in the direction of Crunchbang until i read vezzys argument against systemd and as i understand it Debian is now using systemd... so now i am curious as to what the community thinks of these two distros.

Thank you in advance for the input!

Well, these are both Debian based distros. In fact, the only difference between Crunchbang and Debian is that Crunchbang comes with Openbox and a conky, instead of GNOME. Mint is so similar I can't even really tell the difference between them.

The whole damn Debian family is just 50 of the same distro with a different wallpaper and varying desktop environments.

If this is your first *nix experience I'd say go with Mint. Just as long as you don't even bother with Ubuntu.

Haha, i had no intention of going with Ubuntu or any of its knock-offs.

Do you have a recommendation for a non systemd distro?

To clarify, Mint actually comes with its own distro-specific tools and is prebundled with tons of software to get up the average user going.

Crunchbang :) or just install a minimal debian and put openbox on top of it.

Same thing just different polish.
The polish is something you'll learn to do yourself and stop caring about pre-built and bloated distro's over the years.
