New Window into a New Distro
« on: October 21, 2013, 08:15:20 PM »
As some of you may know, I've recently transitioned into the next phase of my linux career. Slackware. This was largely due to vezzy's write-up on the major *nixes. I like the idea that Slackware is the most *nix like of all the *nixes, and uses alot of BSD style behavior. So, for now Arch linux will be set aside, although I'm sure I'll come back to it one day. Anyway, I figure that a new distro deserves a new environment, and I'm bored of openbox anyway. I'm also not insanely into the options offered by Slackware. Flux and blackbox are both similar to openbox, I tried twm and don't particularly like it, definitely not into XFCE or KDE either for obvious reasons.

I've heard a few of you mentioning plenty of good things about tiling wm's, and I've never used one before but I think it's time to start. I'm thinking Awesome..

What do you think?

I primarily alternate between Fluxbox and Xfce, myself.

Tiling window managers are great for power users and especially if you use text editors that involve lots of keystroke wizardry, like vi and emacs.

Personally I recommend something like dwm or i3. awesome is originally descended from dwm, anyway.

Awesome is great, using it for quite some time now.
Otherwise I would suggest I3 and as vezzy says , DWM , the mother of all tilers :)
When it comes to speed it really doesnt differ much , DWM is pure  C so in theory the fastest it is however very minimal.
After using it for some time I really wanted some more fancy and modern features, so I switched to awesome.
Awesome has some stuff built in that is kinda neat, only thing I dont like is LUA , weird syntax language.

You must really like editing config files though..
Best of all is that you dont need that stupid mouse anymore, all custom keybindings for me.
Pretty much noone else has a damn clue how to control my box :P

I see, so you have keybindings to switch between windows and things like that? I don't even know..

That's the whole point of a tiling WM.

Yeah, I guess it is isn't it.  ::) Well, I think I'm leaning towards Awesomewm for now.

Awesome and i3 are the tilling wms that most people recommend I think. I used i3 on a little barebones box I had for a while, not that bad once you get used to the keybindings especially if you're doing a lot of work from the terminal. It's a little weird at first though but that passes.
