Hosting my own site?
« on: January 18, 2013, 03:01:12 AM »
I know a fair bit of html, css, etc.. and I've done some research but I haven't really gotten a clear answer yet. How would I go about hosting a website from my own server? I have written all of the code myself and would like to host it actively but don't know where to go from here.

Perhaps that will help...i'm not sure if I would recommend Ubuntu though. I don't know much about servers, though, just did a bit of research. Good luck :)

How about port forward your stuff and give an IP? If not, go get a domain. Then host your stuff. But I have to agree, online hosting is better.

I have looked into hosting and would definitely prefer a Linux server or Windows. I have done some work with Ubuntu server and didn't like it. I used Fedora server for a web server in school, paired with Nginix I thought it was alright. My achilles heel is Apache I have not done anything with it. I want to though

Ubuntu from my understanding is a horrible as a server. I would recommend something light. Also, I love Apache.

Just putting that out there.

LAMP

I use Debian and CentOS as a server and have liked both. I only use a windows server (WAMP) to test scripts on my local machine. If you want to use your home computer, just set up a nix box, throw debian on there then install LAMP, configure, restart, use.

As far as buying hosting, I would go with a VPS as it gives you more control over your server, but you can buy a shared server for like $2+ a month. Decent VPS's usually go around $15/mo

I definitely want a nix box, I would prefer Fedora or possibly something like CentOS.

Ive been using CentOS as a web server for years now. Its a perfectly fine operating system. Fedora, like Ubuntu, ive always considered more of a desktop OS than a server OS. Sure they can all do everything but i just dont see them in that light. just a matter of opinion perhaps however.

That said... while Apaches config file can be extremely daunting, 90% of the defaults are fine id say. However, you can install something like XAMPP for Linux if you feel the task is too daunting. This will install Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl, FTP and other popular modules. Pretty much its everything you need and a few things you want.

Then its just a matter of making the server accessable. You could just hand out an IP... but those can change. Or you could use a service like no-ip. Or you could get a domain and software that will automatically update your domain records. Might also need to set up some port forwarding as well. But this is all information that is easily found online.

Well damn thanks! I'll definitely look into it!
