Work Web Application
« on: June 01, 2014, 04:34:23 AM »
Ok so I'm a security guard and my bosses think I'm some super duper computer wizard that can do anything. Anyways besides that I need some input.

I'm thinking of using CodeIgniter to use as a base to build what they want, and then later market it.

So pretty much a cloud security management software. The ability the site will need is various ranks (ie user classes) with different permissions to do different things such as view and print a schedule as well as create a schedule. Also a time clock feature to clock in and off duty with geotagging via WiFi or mobile. Also to manage and track employee records such as their guard card and when it expires and alerts employer and employee. Also tracks business expenses and payroll. Export for QuickBooks, etc. Pretty much an all in one application. At first you wanted just a time clock but there's too many out there. So I figured a fully featured site that handles all aspects of the company.

So I have no problem spending the next year developing this as I have several connects with a lot of different companies that would love to buy self branded versions of this for some serious cash.

My only question is is there a framework that will save me a lot of time such as CodeIgniter, HeroFramework, MODX, etc that will enable me to create this in much less time?

Keep in mind I don't care if I use a framework to create it because they would rather have it done than later.

Also if you guys know of a better framework to use let me know.

Also this must be web based, PHP, MySQL, HTML5, CSS, etc

If you know Python, get into Django.

Otherwise, I would prefer Phalcon over CodeIgniter. I'm sure @Factionwars can tell a bit more about PHP frameworks than I can.

Phalcon: Phalcon is a relatively new framework written as a C extension. It's known to be the fastest PHP framework out there. What surprised me the most is, when one of my PHP friends (been a hardcore PHP nerd for 14 years), who really really hates frameworks, instantly fell in love with Phalcon. Imo, Phalcon also has a really great documentation and a fair community. (http://phalconphp.com/en/)

Personally I don't think this project is "that" big. If you give it the time it needs you can have it done in a couple of months. It all sounds very interesting, great idea, and if you need any help, jump on the IRC or PM me here.

Let's get this straight, codeIgniter is old and not preferable for use in new projects. Phalcon is to be used for high performance which you don't really need usually (unless you will really stress your servers).

I prefer Laravel myself, it's basically everything what the other frameworks did not reach because they all depend on old PHP versions and old styles etc. I don't have to peptalk you for laravel vs codeigniter vs modx vs the rest of acient php because google is filled with arguments why laravel is the way to go.

Edit:
Biggest reason :

Look at the dates.
