Python OS Project
« on: February 07, 2014, 07:58:51 AM »

Quote from: About
Python OS Project (POP) created with idea to make a pure python OS. POP based on linux kernel (currently 2.6.32) and GNU userland utilities. A lot of utilities are already written, including base soft, like:
  • Terminal emulator (POPemu) ls, ps, rm, cp, rmdir, mkdir, clear, cat, tail, bzcat, zcat, cmp, mv, wget, top, etc.
  • Installer (Python+some utilities in C)
  • mplayer frontend mpd and moc frontends Filemanager
  • Web-server (based on http://cherrypy.org/) (POPweb)
  • Jabber and ICQ client (POPim)
  • Simple raster graphics editor
  • PDF, djvu viewer
  • Python games
  • and many others
We think, that OS, written in simple interpreted language, like python, allows us to dominate desktop operating systems market.

Third-party tools (Python)
  • Wm - qtile
  • Image viewer
  • BitTorrent client
  • Mercurial
  • Text editor
  • Database
  • Other widely used python software, such as mirage, gajim, etc.
ToDo:
  • Web browser
  • Office - DONE (In beta version)
  • X-server
  • Linux Kernel
  • Dominate desktop OS market!

Looks pretty interesting.
Only one question, why is there a link saying "porn search engine" at the end of the page?

It appears to be a porn search engine.... :D

The overhead from the interpretation is gonna make this grueling. Though I'm assuming they're not using CPython.

There's a DE written in pure Python, called Sugar. It's used in the computers given out for the One Laptop per Child project.

Even though I love Python I have a hard time understanding how this can be beneficial in any way? Interpreted languages should not be used to create operating systems.

Oh, they certainly can be and there is no problem with it. The Lisp machines of the '70s and '80s pioneered vital computing concepts (including laser printing and graphics rendering) and were written entirely in (usually interpreted) Lisp dialects.

However, their hardware was specially built for the purpose. Nonetheless, if you can bootstrap a highly efficient interpreter (which the default CPython is not, PyPy might be a better option), it's feasible.

No, they're using pypy.

Well their aim seems to be an extremely and easy modifiable OS.

And they also claim to be doing it for fun, they've been at it since the start of 2009.

In the end, if it really works then i don't care what is feasible for an OS cos like hell alot of people love python and it would be a great  idea to get it on the streets.
If you can't explain it to a 6 year old, you don't understand it yourself.
