When I boot into windows it runs a disk check every time. I let it go through and all seemed to be fine. Both OS's work fine. Previously ran hitman pro and it found socks.exe to be a trojan. Figured it was a false-positive(I downloaded it from the 3proxyhome page and figured ande wouldn't post a malicious link on this site) Nonetheless I deleted it. Restarted...windows ran a disk check again. So I rebooted in safe mode ran hitman pro. No detections. Ran TDSSKiller. Nothing. Ran avast! Nothing.

I'm pretty sure there's no virus on my pc. Searched problem on web and only found people saying that this problem means there's a virus. Any ideas?

I'm not sure if this will help but I can across this link on google http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/chkdsk-runs-every-time-boot-t72388.html

I'd also suggest you run all questionable files in a VM (virtual Machine) so that you can restore to a snapshot if anything goes wrong.

1. install virtualbox (or something comparable)
2. install and configure OS of choice
3. take snapshot of configured OS
4. test apps and if anything goes wrong restore to snapshot

either that or upgrade to Linux, I've never had a virus with Linux :)

I run a dual boot windows 7 and ubuntu 11.10. Thanks for the quick response  :D . It happens no more. I started in safe mode, ran hitman, ran tdsskiller, removed socks.exe. All is fine now. I figured it was a false positive since socks.exe was something I downloaded from a link one of the admins here posted, but my computer insisted there was a problem. Ah well, problem solved I suppose. Still want to download 3proxy though..

Well 3proxy might not be false positive, but it's not a virus either - it gets detected because some actual viruses have a proxy function. 3proxy is not a virus.

Also I had a similar problem with CHKDSK on WinXP - it was really annoying so I turned it off with a command:

chkdsk /x drive_letter:Usually it runs that check after some time to ensure integrity of the drive. If your HDD has bad sectors it might run that thing every time...

Well fortunately it stopped running. Obviously things are fine now. I didn't want to run that command because I didn't want to simply ignore the problem....this is a new pc and the first one I've ever owned to myself. I'm pampering it.

So socks.exe is fine then? I don't want my computer to start running disk checks again

Disk checks were ran not because of that little program, so you are safe.
