Im pretty sure the whole linux support thing had one single intend, this one.
Based off linux they can build their own OS which is something steam was prone to do at some point.
Pretty clever move imo.

They also plan to eventually start selling hardware too. Like Steam boxes and stuff.

If you enjoy Gary's mod, Rust is in pre-Alpha for 20$ on steam and is quite addictive. It's like a grown mans minecraft.
