Don't you hate these idiots who call themselves hackers?

Man something that pisses me off are those freaking idiots who call themselves hackers for nothing, like knowing a few keyboard shortcuts. One example: www.lifehack.org/articles/technology/9-tips-surf-the-web-like-hacker.html.
Anyway, what do you think about these noobs?

I've run across a few people that claim all kinds of things. Usually at past jobs. Some guy bragging about hacking peoples facebook accounts, or cracking wifi access points, or being apart of a DDoS for Anon or something. Generally I would just ignore it and let them have some lime light because I knew they where full of shit and just needed people to like them or think they where smart. I don't mind them, the people I do mind are the ones acting better than other.

Like the ones trying to correct everyone or putting people down for not knowing what torrenting is. I have literally witnessed someone making fun of another person for not knowing how torrents are downloaded. Pissed me off. When I encounter these kind of people I test them. Like with the torrent douche, I asked him what languages he codes in. He literally said C, Java, PHP, C#, VBasic, Pearl, and Ruby. I proceeded to ask him if he has tried Python. He had no idea Python was a language. I asked him what the difference between scripted and compiled languages was, again blank look on his face. Recursion? He claimed I was making words up...

I thought, ok if he is such an 31337 haxor, he should at least know about DNS spoofing, you know since he pops server shells with metasploit all the time [rolls eyes]. He couldn't even tell me what a DNS does. After putting him in his place for the next 15 min, I told him to stop trying to abuse people because he knows a few terms he learned on the internet. He quit 2 days later and I don't feel bad for it.

I was a prick. I used what I knew to put a douche bag in his place by going to his level. But maybe the fag went home and googled some shit and started really learning something. Personally, I do not call myself a hacker. I don't care for people who do call themselves hackers either. Hacker is a title that is given to you, not something you give yourself. When someone calls me a hacker I agree. When someone introduces me to someone new and says I'm a hacker, I don't deny it. But if someone asks me if I'm a hacker I say no. I tell them I'm someone interested in tech and testing my skills and limits.

With that said, being a hacker isn't even a title you can place on someone. It is a way of thinking, a way of learning, and a way practicing knowledge.

Sorry for the 'rant'. I've had a few beers and reminiscing on my past. Or some faggy shit like that.

Tech couldnt have said it better. Although not all hackers are modest like tech, what he says is true. Friends and family label me a hacker but I'm just a computer nerd. I love playing with computers and experimenting with scripts. I don't consider myself a hacker. I do however love tinkering and changing shit to suit my needs, as a literal translation, sure that makes me a hacker but I don't label myself. I have skills behind a computer and no master at any one thing. I'm capable but meh what do I care, I'm a data packrat and love knowledge.

Tech, I would love to meet your torrenting douche, I'd put him in his place with the quickness lmfao. D u even supply bruh. Probably ran around like a chicken with his head cut off when tpb got raided. Reminds me of a guy I know. He was all like saying he was an admin of some BT public tracker (name slips me) it was funny when he was being for an invite to ipt when "his" tracker Decided to close its doors from pressure from the MAFIAA that he knew nothing about, some admin hahaha. This was fun reminiscing tech, but then again it could be the sleep deprevention... Where did I put my monster and hotpockets...

Tech said it well. Sometimes arrogance is the only tool needed to disarm severe ignorance.

Not sure if i'm old school, or just an anthropologist of sorts, but I always go back to ESR's HTBH article when he explains something along the lines that if the title of hacker is the only sought after thing by an individual, then they miss the point. Me on the other hand, my family and friends call me a hacker, but my modesty usually deflects it for me. I just love computers, and love learning new things. There truly is no graduation date on any of the information in this growing field.

Yeah, you are all right. Some call me a hacker simply for knowing how to change the wifi password, and this is not even close to hacking. I don't cosider myself one, but I always read stuff to improve my knowledge. I'm just sick of people using the term 'hacking' for anything stupid. I do better ignore them.

God, we had this discussion like a thousand times already. I said it MANY times before and I'll say it again - a hacker is a very broad term, not limited to only tech. It's a mindset, a way of life and it doesn't matter if you're fixing refrigerators for a living, but if you always find a clever way to fix or change certain issues, then I'd say it's what makes up a hacker - it's not breaking passwords and pwning shit. No. It's much more than that.

OP, the term hacker isn't entirely dependent on IT prowess. Anybody can be a hacker. If your tax consultant saves you thousands of dollars on your taxes by doing things contrary to the norm, he/she is a hacker. A guy who turns a table saw into a machine that can drive on ice can also be called a hacker. If someone else calls you a hacker, it should be taken as a very significant compliment that recognizes your ability to think outside of the box.

Like others in this thread, I like to call myself a mad scientist. Partly because I have an Axis II personality disorder, and partly because I like fucking around with shit in ways it wasn't supposed to be fucked around with. If someone calls themself a hacker, they are likely full of shit. This doesn't apply to everyone who calls themself as such, but the overwhelming vast majority of self-proclaimed hackers are just looking for attention. The longer you stick around this community, the more you will realize that all of this hacking crap is just a bunch of smoke and mirrors/parlor tricks. Anybody can do it, if they are 1) willing to think for themselves and 2) willing to put in the time to research and 3) determined enough to try to have an original idea.

I'm fairly certain most of the member's here have a primary goal of innovation. Doing something nobody has ever done before. Over the past however many thousands of years of human history, how many people can say they have had a truly original idea? This is ultimately where hacking will lead you. Original ideas are the holy grail of hacking, and the faster you understand that, the faster you will stop complaining about bullshit like what other people are doing, and focus on what you can do to come up with new ideas.
