Don't think that would work, maybe for pictures and movies... you still need a gyroscope and you need it to track your head motion, so you can't really put a computer to your face 
That problem can be fixed by using FaceTrackNoIR or just using your mouse to look around. You are right that it wouldn't be convenient, but it is a fix.
By streaming I mean streaming by using a cable connection, USB to USB. There would be a slight delay but I'd be able to live with it. I know there are android devices that support HDMI output, now there just has to be an android phone with HDMI input
I excpect more apps to become available soon because GearVR will be released!
