"Gears of War 1/2" mini-review
« on: September 20, 2013, 07:30:11 PM »

Gears of War is a third-person shooter video game franchise created and owned by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Studios. The four games that currently make up the series take place on the fictional planet Sera and focus on a war between humans and creatures known as Locust. All of the games are noted for their heavy violence.

My input:

This is one of the games where you don't release the fire button and plow through the stages killing everyone. Doesn't require a lot of thinking.
But the game has a cool gameplay and some cool scenes. Game idea is also a good one. First game was OK, was hoping for second one to be better, but it was almost the same. Story continues, but the surroundings and combat controls are the same...

Yeah, these games are the epitome of the whole "just run at  the enemy and spray them with bullets" genre. It gets incredibly boring. Plus I feel like they ripped a bunch of stuff off from other games (I haven't played since it came out, so I don't remember what specifically). Everything was grey and boring looking. And the storyline was rather depressing, since you kind of never really figure out what the Locust things are, and the humans just get killed off the whole time. To me this is just a perfect example of those cookie cutter games that somehow were top sellers.

Lol but what about the 3rd/Judgment? I haven't play Judgement yet, but the 3rd one was absolutely great. I LOVE the GOW series; the gameplay, the locations, the ominous feelings, the gore.. I love it. As far as I've seen, in the third one the combat DOES change slightly, not very much but it's a bit satisfying, and the surroundings are a bit new but still essentially the same. But the game does a good job of immersing you in the storyline, and that's a huge thing for me.

I disagree with some of this.. If you'd pay enough attention to the storyline, you do find out what the Locust are and why their attacking humans. Also, I thought the scenery and colors were great, the games really pulled off an "old abandoned industrial" type look, and I thought the color scheme was perfect for the game.

I haven't included 3rd and judgement because I didn't play them yet :P but I will soon.
Also I agree with theellimist. It is a cookie cutter game, but I still like it :P

I haven't played the third one, so I can't really speak on that. Yeah I understand what they were going for with the color scheme stuff, but I just think it got boring really quickly when everything looked like that.

I played Gears Of War 1 when it came out and still do. Everyone seemed to anticipate the second installment as an improvement of course. I think they ruined the series though. Example: in the 1st the moving is smooth and you have the ability to 'wall-bounce' like crazy in an attempt to throw off the enemy. In the 2nd the movement seems way slower and they have eliminated that by making you stick to any wall you cover.
