I second 'learn python the hard way' - after you've finished the material the the best way to learn and stay motivated  through the next phase is to design a project from the ground up to solve a real world problem . I wrote a linux dvbapi wrapper module to move my satellite dish and autoscan every transponder - simple enough but really embeds the syntax and fundamentals of the language :)

\x would usually imply a trailing hexadecimal block and indeed most of your code does fit this pattern. have you tried removing the non-hex chars (could be padding / dummy data)?

I highly recommend mint 17.3 xfce as a starter distro. rock solid and  regularly updated - cant fault it

Was given a commodore 64 for christmas aged 8 - i spent most of that year learning BASIC rather than playing the bundled games ! From there progressed onto Atari ST, and finally a big PC - never looked back!
