Operating System / Re: The Boot Hangs At Syslinux
« on: April 15, 2013, 03:51:44 AM »
I see I'm too late to the party. The dd command is the ONLY way I've ever been able to successfully burn Arch to usb. The catch-22 is that you need a *nix to use this, and you are needing to do that so you can get a *nix. But, I've never had any luck doing it any other way.

Also, I was able to burn Arch onto a less than 1gb usb drive. Don't know if that matters to you..

they actually have dd for windows these days. lol! but im still having trouble even booting this shit lol. still working on it though. :)

Operating System / The Boot Hangs At Syslinux

Im trying to boot Arch from a USB. Right off the bat let me state that this is NOT an Arch problem. When i write any iso image to the usb (via UNB). On the boot-up, im prompted with the first screen "syslinux .. copywrite .. ect." It doesn't move from this screen. I have given it at one point 30 minutes max. keep in mind its like the screen is frozen and i cant type anything. Through my research i have concluded that this problem is not specific to any distro nor is it related to what program you use to write the image to the usb. (90% sure on that). a lot of people like to attach this to Ubuntu generally because its the most common distro im sure. the usb is formated with the FAT system and im doing this all in w7. i dont know if this is need information but for some reason the usb is recognized (by the computer) in the bios boot menu under "FDD" NOT "USB". please, i have not been able to find a solution anywhere. thanks.

I want to jump straight at Arch. Honestly that's a little crazy, i know.. i have little exp. With terminals, i haven't been using Linux for more that 4 months (Ubuntu), But Arch is the whole reason i got into Linux in the first place. I posted a thread about booting it from a USB .. and i was accused of being lazy and that i was crazy if i thought i could boot Arch with no problems. so now im asking this: what can i do to prepare my self for a full installation of Arch. i don't care how long it will take me thats fine. i want to know what i need to do.. what do i research? what do i study? Dont fucking tell me to go Google it... no. im asking the web personally. im honestly waiting for that down to earth response from Lucid :D

Nope it was dd, and I understand I can download an instillation tool for windows from there website but that ruins my purpose. I really wanna boot it off my USB I just wish I knew what was wrong? Let me try everything suggested and I'll be back.

im starting this one from my old post with new questions. so after about 2 days of reaserching my problems i have come back with more refined question. As my old ones were very blunt and generic. so when i format my usb as FAT32 (windows) my computer reads it under FDD but if i format it under NTSF it reads it under USB so that i dont understand. also i looked into dd since im running windows i had to find it and i did. so in my reasearch i found a dd command "if=ubuntuisofile.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=1M" x being a varible. and it gave me a weird response (note the usb was unmounted, but i have tried it mounted and got the same response) "of=/dev/sde was unexpected at this time." since i have been accused of being lazy i dont want a straight answer but if anyone can tell me what questions i need to ask and what i need to research that would very helpful. thank you.  :D

It's not that I'm lazy, I Have come home and have been working on this for three days straight... So please, chill out. It was the first time I realized there was another way besides vmwares shit. Arch just so happen to be the first distribution I tried dude. And if I'm told dd is the most efficient way then by hulks left testicle I learn it. I did not know arch was going to require the effort I have ALREADY put into it much less even more time. I understand I'm new, I understand people that know there shit hate new people lol I'm the same way. There is a reason I came to this forum specifily to learn and thats what I'm doing self accomplishment is fucking awsome being insulted sucks :,( thanks for everything guys. I know what I need to do <3

im clueless wtf do i need to do, whats going wrong? process of elimination... the problem cant be specified to either distribution due that they both did the same thing... so im thinking theres a problem with how UNB is writing it to the flash drive but i dont know the dd command line          :( should i try win32?
