Title: Which OS?
Post by: cat_vs_mouse on April 16, 2012, 09:30:32 PM
Hi. Today I decided to get an old computer which I had lying around, not doing much running again for my half-sister - she's 8. It's running Windows Millennium Edition and so I want to change the Operating System.

Now, here's the question:
She only has experience with Win XP and 7  :'( . I've got a copy of the Windows 8 ISO on my own computer so, should I change the OS to Ubuntu Linux or keep with the same sort of GUI and install Windows 8? Bear in mind, she won't be doing any hacking...

Put winXP on that thing, install XBMC and have fun with your new media center :D

I did that and documented everything here: http://newage.ql.lt/blog/?p=943

Install Ubuntu and install a bunch of games from the repo, it's good to start them young :)

I don't always recommend linux to eight year olds. But when I do, I prefer ubuntu.

Ubuntu here too. It's free and more secure. I can't imagine what kind of links an 8yr old will follow.

You can make it look like Windows 7 (http://www.howtogeek.com/55985/how-to-make-ubuntu-linux-look-like-windows-7/) if that's what they really want.

No, not Ubuntu -- Xubuntu. Ubuntu itself will make you want to die. Try Xubuntu, better environment.

@Sir- I don't want to die, although ubuntu 10.04 with broadcom and apparently realtek makes me want to kill puppies. But ubuntu in general doesn't make me want to die. I'd like to hear your reasoning. ;D

Reasoning:
Gnome 3
Unity

Anything that makes you want to kill puppies you should probably avoid like the plague. lol

On the actual subject though, I am using Vista and wouldn't recommend it to my enemies. I've been considering changing to Ubuntu.

I
Hate
Vista.

Ubuntu is a good linux for starters. I'm using ubuntu right now. Thinking about switching to debian.....

It is. My decision probably reflects the fact that I should stick with ubuntu for awhile longer. I was looking into Gentoo or Arch but I don't think I am qualified.

Well I've been using Ubuntu for three years. I love it. I prefer Unity to Gnome. It is very keyboard friendly, lol. I don't think I will change anytime soon. But if I do I will probably start using Debian too!

Arch will also teach you a lot. I am really glad that I switched to Arch, because it forces me to learn.

For the TO: I think Ubuntu is fine.
