Post by: Monsta on January 08, 2012, 11:53:44 PM
Hello there! I want to start learning to program but i have no idea where to start. I have little to no experience with programming. Also i wanted to wonder if age mattered, because im only 14. Would be great for help thanks!

I've heard a lot of good feedback about http://www.codecademy.com/ to start basic programming. I'd go there if I were you.

I'd start with Python for begginer coding (though I didn't but I code in python anyway so I know :D)
Awesome and very easy language. It's not like any other, but you would really get the basics of coding.
For that you might wanna check the free book: http://www.diveintopython.net/

Also it doesn't really matter how old are you, as long as you have the brains to do it.

When I was your age (3 years ago), I was learning HTML, and batch scripting (extremely easy) however batch really is a great gateway IMO. A lot of the basics covered in BATCH are seen through more advanced programming languages. However if you have the heart then go for Python (I've heard it's a great language) or C++, both are good choices...

On topic:

I think you should start with books, also age doesn't matter as long as you have a brain you can use

Its not a matter of age,  its a matter of time :D, try books, try vids, try code snippits, try meditating, try fapcoding.

And in the end, use whatever method is good for you ;)

try fapcoding.
I would like to get more details on that, sir.

Quote
A FAP coding technique that realizes enough coding gain to transmit multiple synthetic talking heads over a band limited channel <...>

huh?

Python is a great beginner language. But learning C/++ right off the bat will give you more experience with compilers, memory management, lower level code.

Off topic:
When I was 14, I was building analog robots. Made some B.E.A.M's, binary half-adders, inverting buffer oscillators, blah, blah blah, lol. Coding didn't come till I was 16.

@k3y:
Thank you for the e-book. Been wanting to read that.

I say we get back on topic and discuss fapcoding more in detail

I wonder why you've posted this into C-C++ section ? Did you've any intentions to start learning Programming with C-C++ ?
If your answer is yes then go for Head First C this is the perfect book for beginners, i myself is a huge fan of Head First Series (Head First Java in particular :p)

P.S:  whatever language you're gonna choose you must look into the Head First Series of Programming Books by O'Rielly Media , they teach you as you're supposed to be taught :D

That is like asking "Where can I download English, Japanese, German, ... for free"? It doesn't make sense.
Specifiy your request.

I assume he meant visual studio, because you have to pay for anything better than express.

In this context, any Rosetta Stone downloads lol.

And in the context of what OP wants, agreed.

In my experience you can spare yourself a lot of time by asking for specification instead of making assumptions.
_otter_ could as well meant a book, tutorials, a compiler (instead of an IDE), a language specification, an API documentation or an editor.
