Random question, just wandering if anyone has ever found anything interesting :P
Comment below.
-
Never felt the urge to look through other peoples trash.
-
Its weird but some of the things you find are even worse...
Best/worst thing I have found?
Filled out passport application with a mistake (hence the throwing away)
Porn mags in the bins outside an Elderly Care Home...
-
I got plenty of electronic trash here at work, don't need to dive through actual trash lol. However we have an e-waste container near one building, I take a peak for cool shit everytime I pass it :P
-
I do the same at my work, have a look at the cool things,
found a few RAM sticks with 16gb of memory in motherboards that are being thrown away, and the RAM was fine , that's always nice.

Yeah, one time. It was with a hot chick, with serious hacking skills. But they caught us on camera :/ Somehow this video went on youtube.

Not in adult age, but when i was a kid near where i lived was this huge paper recycle dumpster and we use to "dive in" there with my friends.. Ofc we were hoping to find porn magazines. :D
-
Get lucky with anything?

Get lucky with anything?
If i remember correct we found twice some porn related magazine..:D We also use to read letters and such what people had thrown in recycle dumpster but i don't remember finding anything juicy from those..
-
Have any of you guys gone Dumpster Diving?
For food.
-
@lucid Sad times :(
-
e-recycling plant one block from my house. Running an IBM IntelliStation Z Pro I got from there now actually. Plenty of shit, sometimes a gem or two...
-
Wow, nice man

Don't know who that is but he likes Aaron Swartz, so he must be okay...
-
I have once only because I watched as six computers were being tossed in. ;D
-
Good lad ;)
-
Now I might go raid the computer repair lab at my school soon I noticed a massive pile of hdds and ssds the other day :P .
-
Got to love those SSDs ;)
-
No,never. I got some dignity that keeps me from looking through other people's trash.
For food.
Fo'real?
-
You find gems and recyclables so that's money+some shit. Just remember the age old saying "one mans trash is another mans treasure"
-
Fo'real?
Oh yeah, with all the perfectly good food that America wastes? I find clean untainted food, sealed tight, in the dumpster all the time thanks to grocery store policies of expiring everything ten minutes after it arrives at the store. It's not even gross really.

I had a friend that would do that when fast food places would throw out there fries when they would switch to the breakfast menu.

I don't get it? I assume every and each one of you can afford to put some food on the table. Then why bother searching the trash? It's just humiliating.
-
I used to dumpster dive down town near where I live. Can't help it when you see a power cord hanging out I have to know what it is. Pulled some cool stuff because of that habit. Couple old towers when i was younger, first game came from that good old doom. Also my first laptop was a dumpster score behind a best buy.Last month pulled a couple catalytic converters off cars some one was tossing in my neighbor hood scrap value at the time was $70 a piece. Years ago I used to raid the dumpster behind food bank, if its dented they toss it probably toss thousands of pounds of food a year that way.

There was a TV program on a whole banquet that was made from expired/thrown away food, it was amazing, most of the food we throw away due to the date is completely fine...
'The Bin Banquet'

One of my old homeservers was obtained from a dumpster.
Perfectly fine PC with the data still on it, that was kinda funny, incl pics etc.
Think they threw it out because it was a cluttered vista box :P

Axon I don't really know you or know how much money you make but let's say you make a moderate amount of money. Maybe 30-40$/hr. You can more than provide for yourself. Let's also realize that ALL of the waste has monetary value. Most is like 10cents a pound granted, but some things could be extremely valuable.
As long as what you can pull out is worth more than your wage, or more tha nwhat you cosnider your time to be worth (which is often different) then it was time well spent. Now I haven't gone picking through trash for yearsss but when i was a kid I would sometimes go out and make 50$/hour just nabbing recyclables. So it CAN be profitable, and to be entirely honest, though i never did, If i had went behind a store and saw some guy dump sealed, freshly expired food... why not?
THe only real negative is that you consider it gross and/or humiliating. How much is ithat worth really? Sure, Id rather work a 9-5 for 40, than dig through trash for 50, but if the discrepancy gets larger... well it gets harder.
And if I was (thankfully i havent in years) working a min wage job, fuckin rights id take whatever i could get! If im driving hom after wasting 8 hrs of my life to make 80$, and ai see some dude toss 40$ worth of food... thats half my days wage! Fuck humiliation! Im eating for free and maybe making my rent on time.
Tl;Dr: People are in differing life situations, and have differing tolerances or requirements compared to your perceived humiliation.

And when you pull out a 'broken' PC which is a 2013 model, with only a cable issue they failed to notice and grab yourself a handy £450 you cant deny that is worth you time, or a few vac packed steaks that are completely fine...
-
I did it all the time, at my pc repair job. Got all my external hds and laptops and pcs that way. (Ever look in my pc room I have about 10 Pentiums in the floor that work.)
I used to dumpster dive and get food and toys all the time when I was younger. I found a whole box of expensive chocolate a Dillards threw out. It was boxed and still wrapped. mmmm chocolate. Hell if I see something valuable on the side of the road, or in a dumpster i am taking it. I work 3 jobs and live have around 1400$ a month in bills. I total an amount of about 1200 a month. I think me working my life away and hours for pretty much nothing while still going in debt kind of kills the humiliating factor of free stuff.

Heres a Pic of the stuff I got out of dumpster. all computers, monitors, and laptops were in the dumpster.

Photo looks like its 10 years old aha ;)

I've scored many things dumpster diving, actually had a little business going. When I was younger at all the goodwill donation station we would go at night (family event, we called "good will hunting") and people would dump donations/garbage, and it even said no dumping so we were doing a community service taking the stuff. We would turn around and have a yard sale every week. Recently I was working security at a expensive ass condo complex, scored a set of nice leather chairs because one of the legs broke on 1 of the chairs and they threw the set of 4. I also got a 23" Asus HD monitor (LCD) just no cables, but fuck I had a power cable and dvi so now I have dual monitors, for free. I've picked up a lot of computer components and mobos. Not to mention the amount of data that could be found. I also learned that Walmart throws out opened returned electronics and have gotten iPods, iPads, cell phones, printers, home phones, and even a laptop. Nothing humiliating about it.

I did not know that about walmart. I'll have to go check them out sometime.

I've never gone dumpster diving but if I can get that kind of stuff from walmart then I might have to start.

The main thing besides the money and hardware is the FUCKING NUDES THAT YOU FIND, *calms himself* on a real its weird how much you can find on a HDD
-
And thats why i offer to take any hard drives that anyone is getting rid of. 8)
-
That's why I destroy my hds when I get rid of them. Magnet plus I take a hammar to the disks and a little bit of fire. No ones recovering shit from my trashed drives.
-
Yeah, and no, I haven't because I didn't do it more than once. May be because I'm a girl, and queasy, but I can't sift through people's trash. I get someone to do it for me and I stand behind them. :/

FAKE, NO, TOO MUCH, GO AWAY, SCARY FEMALE... you wouldn't believe that I have a girlfriend...

This is why women rule the world. Because boobs can do that sort of thing to the minds of men.
Also..I used to do dumpster diving quite a bit and got grand things out of it. We mostly went in for information(back before people thought about security & shred/burn policies) but occasionally we'd score some hardware. There weren't that many places back then that had good hardware to throw away. Still, we did once score a good credit card reader and subsequently converted it to a reader/writer. We made several cards and stole a lot of money from people. It took me years to pay it back(when I finally came to my senses and developed an ethos by which to live). These days I'm too fat to fly so I don't really do dumpster diving anymore.

Xires a naughty convict ehh
-
'Convict' would suggest that I was actually tried & sentenced to jail for these crimes. I was not. I have never been caught, tried nor convicted of any hacking or computer-related crime. That would require there to be enough evidence left behind to build a case.
-

I don't know why you'd assume that.
-
Long time ago, I did do some dumpster diving for a couple of times. Some of the things that I found was interesting, while others weren't. Here's a list of interesting things I found while dumpster diving: Sony 45 inch TV (One of those old ones with the big back); a box filled with old educational books (Psychology, Philosophy, History, etc); some discarded online receipts from Amazon, Paypal and Ebay, which I found really weird; an old wooden clock, and a Lexmark printer (To add to my printer collection).

Most walmarts have their garbages locked now, mine did when they caught some guy on camera digging threw their garbage haha good thing they have shitty cameras lmfao

Mine probably has it locked up. It's in a semi sketchy area and drug dealers and beggars hang out in front of it.
-
Walmart - locked
Jewel(and related stores, i.e. Albertsons) - locked
Aldi - unlocked
Wisteds - unlocked
Piggly Wiggly - unlocked
Most others - locked
@shadowwolf - If there are homeless people in front of it then there's nothing good left in there for you anyway..

Love all the replies this thread is getting :)

True...

Scary male, shoo.
Huh? Really?
Okay, so I did do dumpster driving a few times with a friend, like I was going through the trash - but it all ended when someone's (literally) shitty tampon went up my sleeve. I think they stuck it up the wrong end or something. :/
This is why women rule the world. Because boobs can do that sort of thing to the minds of men.
I shouldn't have laughed so hard at that. Um, and it's another female who did the sifting for me 50%-75% of the time. :)

Good thing bolt cutters are relatively cheap and semi easy to conceal.
