Title: Lock picking.
Post by: Dropchop on July 24, 2011, 12:56:02 AM
Is anyone else into this? I just picked up my first set of picks and picked my first lock, today.

I think I'm hooked. :P

Been doing some picking with home-made stuff. Getting some good picks soon tho. Picked a few locks ;) The first one is always epic.

I have a pick set also :P picked the padlock when I got it with the diamond pick... can't seem to pick it now lol, although I did it several times. Trying to open neighbors garage now lol, because he's never at home...

I used to play around a bit with it.
Know some of the techniques and how different picks should be used but i havnt picked a lock in ages (had a shoebox filled with locks that i practiced on) threw everything out when i was cleaning the room but i suppose i could still do it  :-\

Got a set aswel, can pick some pretty solid padlocks and almost all shtty cheap ass locks

I tried but failed because I was using paperclips instead of a pick set. I should go again, I'm probably just not trying hard enough. My friend locked his safe key inside his safe and had to open it with paperclips, lol.

Any suggestions on a set? The reviews of cheap ones always say they're flimsy so I'm considering the hacksaw blade mod.

I'm using this (http://www.southord.com/Lock-Picking-Tools/Lock-Pick-Set-14-Piece-Metal-Handles-MPXS-14.html) set right now and it seems good enough for a beginner.

My next step is to buy some more locks... I started with a cheap drugstore Masterlock knock-off and it's easy as fuck to unlock.

Looks good but I'm trying to be a tightwad here :P I don't wanna spend a bunch of money on little pieces of stamped metal.

I've got a set of picks myself, they were relatively cheap ones though which means I can only pick certain types of locks (otherwise they bend). The only use I get out of mine is when I need to re-start the router because it's behind locked doors.

If the picks bend then you are doing it wrong
Theres barely any tension put on the pics (except for the turning thing ofc)

Yeah it's the turning tool that bends my others don't. I need some stronger ones.

First, the pressure you put on the turn thing shouldnt be more then wresting your thumb on it or something, its just to put tension on the pins.
And if it still bends (wow shitty quality) then just make a new one in the schools woodshop or wherever you can get your hands on a tiny piece of metal.
Come to think about it, you should be able to make a fugly one by bending one tooth on a fork :D
You're a hacker, find something and make it work to your advantage

Oh, that reminds me: a ground-down hex key makes a good tension wrench. I have spares from various shelving kits so I could use one of those.

Time for a necro.

I'd like to buy a normal set of picks, where should I buy from? the shop has to support PayPal and should ship worldwide.
Southord is cool, but they want me to enter my CC details, that's clearly what I don't want.

Picks should be available at your local hardware store. If not, try this (http://www.fasttech.com/products/1931/10003085/1433511-12-in-1-multi-function-stainless-steel-lock-pick)
The package contains a pouch, 12 types of picks, two pressure wrenches and a pair of tweezers. It's all stainless steel too.

Looks like shit to be quite frank :P but I guess they are cheap, also do they fit for EU locks?
My local hardware store won't have such stuff, trust me.

If you're looking for something better, try this,

Costs 160 bucks though :P

They accept paypal, lots to choose from. I buy all my random chinese computer shit from them as well as a shitty lockpick set I had (little credit card one) never put it to use lol

Yeah I buy shit from DX weekly lol. Their lockpicks are cheap shit as well. Had a set, they were flimsy, wouldn't fit into the lock sometimes, tension wrench was garbage and broke.

How about this one? http://www.ukbumpkeys.com/collections/lock-picks/products/southord-5pc-slimline-euro-lock-pick-set
They ship internationally and accepts PP, maybe even bitcoin lol. Suck on that Taters!

They don't have a big selection of Southord tools, but the basic toolkit would probably suffice my simple needs. However it costs 4$ more than on Southord site, but that isn't too much. Don't know about the shipping costs though...

I became interested in lock picking at a very young age, my father was in the military and he showed me how to pick locks when I think I was 9. More or less. I was thinking of purchasing a set from Lockpickshop...

That shop is great, but holy fuckfest it adds like 40$ to the value for shipping to my country!

Ok, finally found a shop that seems legitimate and the prices EVEN with the shipping aren't as bat-shit crazy as others.
I just ordered this set: http://www.walkerlocksmiths.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=718
With shipping and tax it was 26GBP (44$), including some free book about tumbler locks.
According to their terms and services I should get the set in 30 days since shipment. So we'll gonna have to wait and see. Gonna post pics when I'll get it :D

I read that PXS-14 is not made for EU locks. Slim type lockpicks are for Japan and EU locks, with slightly narrower keyways and whatnot. So that's why I bought those (were shipped today btw).

I am selling my PXS-14 and getting the c801 tomorrow :D I almost reverted to my DX set because the hooks on this one are so big.

I got them! it took like a week to get here from UK. Picks feel very nice, small and flexible, feels professional :)
Also got a basic manual how to use them along with the set.

Well, here is my collection so far.
The old abus warded lock (black one) i can crack open.
The abus 85/50 with 4 spool pins i can open, currently working on getting it open faster and more structured.
The abus 65/40 has been a mystery to me so far, no false set no nothing so i think it might justs have some hard personality to it :P.
The little yale is more easy with 4 standard pins and i figured it's binding order (2, 1, 3, 4) so that's picked in a second or 5.

There is also a picture included with the pins from a lock i opened today, it's filled with serrated pins which are high security pins.

I know no one has replied to this in a while, but I just found this post and wanted to share this website to anyone else who stumbles upon this.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/moonshadow/New_Folder/making_lock_picks.htm (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/moonshadow/New_Folder/making_lock_picks.htm)

I have played around with lock picking for quite sometime now, when I first started I was to cheap to buy a set so I looked up how to make them. If you have any old hacksaw blades lying around (or new) and a grinder you could print out these templates and make your own. The metal used in the blades is very strong and makes a nice beginner set. Of course once I knew I liked playing around with locks I bought a set, but these are nice just to get your feet wet (and it seems to have its own satisfaction of making something like this  ;) ).

Additional resources:
www.deviating.net - Deviant Ollam's* Website - Fucktons of great vids and guides there.
lockpicking101.com - great community for locksmiths and the locksport in general
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01vrSd-ooYU - a tutorial on how to build a lockpick station. (Cheap and easy)
Which leads me to the next one: www.ITStactical.com (Alot of great stuff on there... especially for locksport)
I highly recommend a bogata rake set (though it's much better to learn how to Pick before learning to rake)
Deviant also made a second book called "Keys to the kingdom", that goes into impressioning, bumping, etc.
