Title: What do you think About Qubes OS?
Post by: hppd on February 06, 2014, 05:36:32 PM
For those of you that have never heard of it, Qubes is a security based OS that  focuses on isolation for staying secure. Every stack is on a different VM, it's based on XEN and and Linux. They try to focus on speed and stablility so it's not like a regular VM in your machine. Everything is separated, the network, the firewall, the GUI, a windows VM, a VM that isn't connected to the internet for your secure data.. You get the point, right now it's really unknown. But I was wondering what you guys tought of the concept. I'm trying it out later this week :P.

An operating system, where everything is based on VM's. Focuses on speed?

It focuses on security, but what I meant is that it is a lot faster than a regular VM

Depends on the system you're using the VM on. I run VM's on my machine which runs at the same speed as my primary OS.

What is your setup? And why ouldn't it be possible with Qubes to be almost as fast too

My setup is not important, but my specs is good enough to run Windows in a VM without any problems at all. Not that it requires much though. But I still have my doubts in an OS designed by many VM's. I can see the benefits seen from a security point of view, but I don't see how you would be able to make it as fast as a "normal" OS.

In theory it should be faster then a regular VM, so maybe when you run the windows VM inside your computer it's faster then when you run it right now :D. In practice it might be different.. Anyways when I have it installed I'll let you know about the speed, first I need to get that older laptop running.
